  string(7790) "As a Christmas baby, the month of December is personally always a wonderful period for me. Not only because of all the celebrations, fun festivities leading up to the silly season, Christmas, New Year and of course, my birthday bash on the 25th December (No, I’m not turning 2014 this year!)

I always use this time to reflect on my year, my achievements, write down my goals and use the opportunity to be thankful for surviving another year. Whether I exceeded my personal goals and objectives or I managed to take one step closer to reaching my longer term goals, It’s always a positive reflection time!

This year, after my usual reflection, career planning and goal setting I thought perhaps the first activity I should execute to demonstrate my genuine gratitude and how lucky I’ve been in my career. I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by extremely successful and inspiring leaders, mentors, and friends along with professional networks and contacts who are always very generous with tips, ideas, suggestions and general guidance, both personal and professional.

On reflection, I would have to admit that all of my key achievements would be improbable if I had not put in place the support infrastructure to allow me to work towards being happy and successful in my personal and professional life.

For those entering the workforce or working to build a successful career, below are my top 6 tips for budding networkers. These elements were instrumental in building up a network that has helped me reach a place in my life where I have achieved the fine balance of professional success and personal happiness.

1.    Network Presence

In order to network, you need to attend networking events. Not all networking events will be successful and you may not get anything from attending certain events. However even if you feel it was a waste of time as the contacts you gained from that particular event may not be beneficial to you short-term, it is important to remember that you never know where these individuals will end up and at worst, you managed to further enhance your networking and social interaction skills. I highly recommend getting out there. Attend as many networking events as you can and enjoy the actual event rather than just approaching the activity with the mindset that you want something from somebody and everyone there also is doing the same! If you put yourself in a position to interact with people, over time you will start to see your network and contact becoming more defined, and ultimately reach a level where it will benefit you regardless of your chosen career path or your personal passion and interests.

2.    Prepare, Plan & Research for Each Networking Event

It is important to do your research prior to the networking event. You could easily obtain information on the purpose of the networking event, the hosts, the attendees and what you ideally would like to get out of it. It’s not exactly pure goal setting but having an idea on what you would like to achieve by attending the event requires you to prepare, plan and research in order to ensure you give yourself the best chance of a positive outcome.

3.    Personal Profile, Perception & Presentation

Once you know what to expect from your research, it is important to turn up with an appropriate presence that is in line with the format and atmosphere of that particular event. This encompasses the dress code, network style, formality and anything else that requires you to attend accordingly and respectfully. One basic but absolutely crucial element when it comes to networking is that you should always have extra business cards. Running out of business cards and having to exchange contact details via your mobile phone, especially trying to read out your phone number and spell out your name in a noisy environment is not a way to make yourself memorable. More than likely, you will just be another name and a contact number in someone’s phone.

4.    Post Networking – Contact Management

If you attend enough networking events, you will start to realise how many people you do meet. Unfortunately, regular networkers cannot remember everyone or the conversations that were had, especially after a period of time. It only gets harder when you end up attending multiple networking events in a short period of time, so it is very important to do a debrief, makes notes about the people you met and at some point, you will need to build a mini database or categorise your network and contacts in some format. There are a number of Networking Apps available, otherwise a simple Excel spreadsheet is an easy option to capture all the information. Realistically, this is the only way I feel you will be able to manage and utilise your network and contacts effectively.

5.    Elevator Pitch – Personal Introduction

Networking is all about meeting people, and meeting people involves introducing yourself before you can start building rapport, and work to add them into your personal network. It is absolutely mandatory to have what we call in the world of sales, an elevator pitch: A 15-30 second introduction about you, who you are, what you do and whatever it is that is relevant to that networking event to engage that person. Of course, networking is not sales, but it’s important to have an introduction that is professional, concise, engaging and has a personal substance to it in order to gain that person’s attention and interest. First impressions are important and your introduction is your first impression. If you’re meeting someone for the first time, your introduction will define what the conversation may lead to and if you have met this person before, your re-introduction will also create a perception of your personal profile. This is why it’s important to take notes and remember your contacts. Introducing yourself to someone for the first time when in actual fact, that person remembers you from past events will not reflect well on you.

6.    Networking Etiquette – Be Genuine

Once you’ve engaged in a contact at a networking event, always do what you say you will do! If you promise to send an email, forward a contact, introduce someone to your network or extend an invite to another event, it is absolutely crucial that you follow through with your promises. By doing the right thing, you will further enhance your personal character and professional perception. Always ask out of courtesy if you want to connect with them on LinkedIn. This will give you a better conversion rate and they will not feel surprised that you sent the request to connect. Personally, I always like to send a follow up email if a contact has provided me with their business card. This is an opportunity to say thank you for them taking the time to speak with you and an email acknowledges and differentiates you from perhaps a lot of other contacts they may have also met at that event, especially if they gave out lots of business cards. In summary, having a strong network can add a lot value personally and can most definitely assist with you career aspirations and help you achieve your goals.
