I for one had a very bad experience with my first recruitment agency when I came to Australia back in 2012. It’s a long story and I won’t bore you with the details but it definitely taught me a thing or two.

A common misconception is that marketing and clients are what makes any agency but I personally think that in many agencies, candidates are overlooked. Candidates are the core component of any agency; if you don’t have a good calibre of candidates and a good relationship with them, you are setting yourself up for failure.

At Cox Purtell we pride ourselves on touching base with our candidates on a weekly basis. While we may not be calling about a specific job, we believe it is important to get to know each candidate individually and build a firm relationship with them.

Sometimes when there is that urgency to fill a role and “get money on your desk”, people can overlook that essential human element and only see the short term solution.

A good recruiter thinks long term!

Some recruiters that only think on a short term basis may make the “quick buck” but by doing so they ignore integral components of being a recruiter, such as providing a high level of service by building strong relationships.

Thinking short term can make your actions seem transactional instead of providing a service for the client and candidate – which at the end of the day is our core purpose, is it not?

As recruiters, we must always remember the importance of taking the time to get to know your clients and candidates. This will ensure long term, continuous business as opposed to a quick one off transaction.

Thinking long term will give you more credibility and is essentially the recipe to succeeding within the recruitment industry – remember sustainability is key!"
