  string(3350) "I’ve never recruited in Silicon Valley but from research, companies based there like to recruit IT staff. Extremely good IT staff. The world’s best technology staff in fact. This sounds pretty difficult and competitive. So a cottage industry of recruitment start up software systems have sprung up, all promising to give firms the edge.

Systems like Gild, Entelo and Textio appear jaw dropping. To various degrees, they promise to automate writing web ads (better than you can do yourself), scouring every website there is for candidates (and Skynet style continually doing this in the background), building a pipeline of passive candidates and telling you when the optimal time to call them is and automatically organising interviews. So, basically everything.

It’s a far cry away from one of the first companies I worked at in Australia where we had to write all the candidates who had sent their resumes from Seek on a spreadsheet and read them out in the morning.

There are a lot more examples of this and the software is only going to get better and better. Whether you’re an internal or external recruiter this could spell bad news.

All this is part of a much wider global acceleration of automating everything you possibly can in business. Unfortunately for humans we are inefficient, mistake prone and expensive when compared to machines and there isn’t anything we can do about it.

The process started in the 18th century with the industrial revolution. Only now instead of inventing the Cotton gin – Uber has headhunted 40 robotics engineers from Carnegie Mellon University so they can get a head start on developing fleets of self-driving cars.

White collar professions are in just as much danger as logistics and manufacturing. There are now bots that can make millions of calculations to make better financial trades then a human ever could, and law software that scan through paperwork faster than even a team of paralegals could manage.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and a very quick snapshot of where automation is in 2016. It’s not all bleak news under our new android overlords though. The more human traits of influencing, engaging and building relationships are incredibly hard, if not impossible to automate.

It just so happens that these are the skills that (good) recruitment consultants have. Personally I don’t think we’re far off from a time where a Finance Manager can press a button and get 5 quality resumes straight away without any interaction with a recruiter internal or external.

Where the Finance Manager will need help is in the human element of the process – the changing of minds, the last minute salary expectations and the family emergency on the day of the 2nd interview. This will never change and that is good news for all recruiters internal or external."
