I get calls daily from candidates questioning why they have been rejected from the interview process so I’m writing this blog to give you an insight in to what we look for from the moment we screen your resume, all the way through to the offer.

Read the Advertisement Carefully

We are given specific criteria from our clients as to what they are looking for. Recruiters will try and match candidates to the brief given to them, so try and tailor your resume to meet the job brief. And try and make it stand out!

Less Buzz Words, More Examples

“Creative” is the most overused buzzword in LinkedIn profiles in Australia, the social networking site says, followed by “effective”, “motivated” and “extensive experience”. Instead, tell us how you are creative, effective and experienced.

Tell the Truth

Throughout the screening and interviewing process, we question and test candidates extensively to make sure you do what you say you can do. If you can’t explain the gaps on your resume, how are we supposed to?

Listen, Stay Interested & Be Confident

Listen to the details given to you by your recruiter, take notes in the interview to read over at home and be confident, but not overly confident. It is okay to show what you know, but don’t do it in a way that comes across as someone that would have difficulty working with others.

Ask Questions

There is no greater turn-off than a candidate who says “No. I think you’ve answered all my questions.” This shows a lack of curiosity and employers are not looking for indifferent people, they’re looking for people that stand out!

So when you begin your job search make sure that you follow these simple steps and you can be sure that you will gain far more traction from both agency recruiters and from individual companies.

Apply for jobs that you can do and ensure that your application is a true reflection of your achievements and attributes to give you the best possible chance of securing an interview.
