Well, not quite the same quote from the Chinese Philosopher, Lao-Tzu but there is definitely synergy with the motivations behind the quotes!

Remember back in April 2011 when Tech Crunch had a vision about “Web Video on your TV” i.e. That internet-enabled television was one of 7 technologies that were going to rock 2011! (Yes, I know, that was only 3 years ago!).

This was the same time three billion people watched Prince William marry Kate Middleton and of course, our beloved Pringles was sold for $2.35 billion…not quite cheap as chips! (OK, I’m getting carried away with the cringe-worthy jokes…tumbleweed?)

These are some of the events and technology engaged by the world when I first signed up to Twitter!

Fast forward to the present day and my Twitter account has just cracked 10.1k organic followers!

Given how much technology has changed and the social events that occurred 3 years previously seem like a lifetime ago, I thought I would share some tips on how you could establish a community online and create a social media profile that could potentially benefit you personally and professionally.

Twitter is a great complementary tool to help promote your personal and/or your company’s branding. It is a simple concept around building up a social media community and the more followers you have, the more success you will have around content delivery, content engagement, social interactions and business interactions. Below are tips that have worked for me.

Create an Awesome Profile

Your profile needs to be relevant and with only 140 characters to work with in describing yourself and/or your services, you need to be creative and concise. It is highly recommended to complement your profile with a cool profile photo! No one wants to follow a coloured egg!

Promote your Awesome Profile

You can synchronise your Twitter accounts with various social media platforms to further promote your activity and in turn further promote your profile and increase your community/followers.

You can add links on your Twitter profile to direct engagement to your blogs and websites. The reverse is also effective by providing a link to Twitter on your email signatures, highlighting it on your marketing materials, websites, other social profiles and discussion forums.

Follow People

What goes around, comes around – just simple social engagement! If you engage in like-minded individuals on Twitter and follow them, you will likely have it reciprocated, especially when they view your cool profile as outlined above.

Active Activity

One way to quickly lose followers or not having new followers join your community would be the lack of quality activities. If you make it personable, uploading engaging content and interact with your community, you will start to see the momentum with new Followers, Retweets, Favorites, DM’s etc.

More Activity

Why not! I need to emphasise how important this is in the world of Twitter. If you engage in people, ask questions, conduct polls and upload interesting articles and content for your community along with engaging in discussions, this will be reflected in your Followers.

Professional Courtesy

It is important to acknowledge all the interactions including Mentions, Retweets and DM’s in your community. Twitter is also a communication platform so it is important to maintain a level professionalism which your community will reciprocate accordingly.

I hope you find this beneficial. Thanks in advance for reading my blog! Happy #Tweeting!

I invite you to write your comments here … even if it’s just ONE sentence … to share your thoughts and perhaps any additional tips for those interested.
