Exercise has been hyped up to be a cure for nearly everything in life, from focus, to stress relief and sleep patterns, but it has never really been a focus of mine – until now.

Speaking to a friend last week, and gaining some sound advice on how endorphins make you feel good, I have now decided to make it a real focus, for the next few months anyway.

Recent research presented by Harvard has shown the level of increased exercise can influence substance boost in the brain cell (neuron) growth and strengthens cell-to-cell connections, essentially changing brain structure. It even protects neurons against age-related changes that can lead to cell death and dementia.

The line around “how endorphins are released” is more something I throw around to sound smart, without really knowing what it means. Here is what actually happens:

If you start exercising, your brain recognizes this as a moment of stress. As your heart pressure increases, the brain thinks you are either fighting the enemy or fleeing from it. At the same time, endorphins, another chemical to fight stress, is released in your brain. These endorphins tend to minimize the discomfort of exercise, block the feeling of pain and are even associated with a feeling of euphoria.

After reading a great article about endorphins, I came across one that really stuck with me. It explains the connection between Happiness, Exercise and Endorphins.

How Has Exercise Helped Me At Work?

During my career working in Recruitment, and working on the average numbers I have gathered, I have interviewed over 3000 people in over 9 years. I have met more people in those 9 years than some people will ever meet in their lives. The tricky part I have to deal with, is remembering them.

Treating your body well can enhance your ability to process and recall information. Physical exercise increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Exercise may also enhance the effects of helpful brain chemicals and protect brain cells.

My advice to you is look at exercise as a lifestyle approach, rather than a chore. If something is part of your lifestyle, you will tend to be more inclined to do it, just like brushing your teeth.

Set Goals

I have been running for a few weeks but realised it was becoming easy, so I set a goal – run just 1 extra kilometre every time you put your runners on. I ended up running 25km!

Make It Fun & Social

Try to organise to exercise with friends or family. I wasn’t so keen on this, because I use exercise as a ‘wind down’ at the end of the day, but it can be a nice challenge to keep up with someone. Or even just to talk through the day.

I also brought the most outrageous gym gear. The most colourful runners I could find in store, coupled with shiny pants. This has helped with how fast I run.

Give it a try! You won’t be disappointed.
