Insurance Disputes Specialist | Legal and Insurance Background
About the client
Our client is a Tier 1 global general insurer with a long-standing presence across Australia and New Zealand, writing a broad range of policies through retail and wholesale channels. They are known for technical excellence, strong governance and a genuine commitment to fair customer outcomes. You will join a specialist Complaints and Customer Resolution team that is respected across the business for its expertise.
About the role
You will investigate and resolve complex customer complaints and disputes across retail and wholesale policies in Australia and New Zealand. This is work built for legally minded people: interpreting policy wordings, weighing evidence, drafting reasoned determinations and negotiating outcomes with customers and the external dispute bodies. You will work closely with claims, underwriting and legal, and your findings will directly shape how the business treats its customers. It is a temp contract starting ASAP through to the end of February initially.
Duties
- Investigate and analyse internal disputes across a range of business lines and prepare clear, well-reasoned responses.
- Prepare external dispute responses to AFCA in Australia and FSCL in New Zealand, and liaise directly with both bodies.
- Manage complex property and indemnity disputes, including attending conciliation conferences to negotiate settlements.
- Draft IDR determinations for referral to the internal Disputes Resolution Committee.
- Identify themes, root causes and potential compliance breaches, and escalate matters that carry legal or media risk.
Requirements
- Both legal and insurance experience: a law degree with experience as a practising lawyer in Australia or overseas, plus experience in general insurance, ideally in complaints, IDR/EDR, claims or insurance litigation.
- Strong legal reasoning, with the ability to interpret policy wordings and apply them to the facts of a matter.
- Excellent written skills, with experience drafting determinations, legal advice or formal correspondence.
- Knowledge of AFCA, the General Insurance Code of Practice and ASIC RG 271 is highly regarded. Overseas-qualified lawyers who can get across the Australian framework quickly are encouraged to apply.
- Candidates with temporary work rights (Working Holiday Visa's) as well as candidates with full work rights are both welcome to apply
